At the end of 1996 Merkur joint stock company workforce numbered 1.303 in total. 12,9% of all staff had university education, 33,7% secondary education, and 42,7% of employees were either qualified or highly qualified. Only 11,4% of all workforce are semi-qualified or unqualified workers. A rather satisfactory educational structure of Merkur joint-stock company compared to the rest of Slovenian trade industry. In realistic terms, the volume of business increased by 5% in comparison with 1995 when considering the actual price growth of 1996. Wholesale trade accounts for 72% of aggregate sales with the actual sales increase of 4,9%. Retail trade sale rose by 5,2%, accounting for 26,5% of aggregate sales of the joint stock company. Sale of services represents 1,5% of aggregate sales; in realistic terms the volume of services increased by 3,9%.
